Fence Repair That Fixes the Cause, Not Just the Symptom
Leaning posts, sagging gates, storm damage and rotten rails corrected by the crew that builds fences for a living.
Licensed | Bonded | Insured

Most fences do not need to be replaced. They need three or four specific things fixed: the posts that have heaved out of level, the gate frame that has racked, the rails that have rotted where they meet the post, and the hardware that has corroded past the point of holding. Fix those properly and a fence that looked finished can deliver another decade of service.
City Fence LLC repairs wood, vinyl, chain link, aluminum, steel and wrought iron fencing throughout Northern New Jersey. Because we install the same systems, we can match existing materials, spacing and profiles rather than patching a repair with whatever is available. We inspect first, explain exactly what failed, and give you an honest read on whether repair or replacement is the better use of your money.
- Post replacement with proper footings instead of temporary bracing
- Gate re-hanging, frame reinforcement and hardware upgrades
- Storm and wind damage repaired to match the surrounding fence
- Material matching across wood, vinyl, chain link, aluminum and iron
What our fence repair service includes

- Leaning or heaved post extraction and replacement with a new concrete footing
- Rotted rail, picket and panel replacement in matching material
- Gate re-hanging, re-framing and latch/hinge hardware replacement
- Chain link tensioning, top rail and fabric repair
- Aluminum and iron section repair, re-welding and repainting
- Storm damage assessment and insurance documentation support
- Temporary stabilization for safety hazards while parts or weather permit
What we work with
We install and repair every major system, so the recommendation you get is based on your property rather than on what we happen to stock.
Wood Repair
Cedar and pressure-treated pickets, rails, stringers and posts matched to your existing profile, spacing and stain so a repaired section blends with the original run.
Vinyl Repair
Replacement panels, posts, rails and caps in matching color and profile, plus re-setting of posts that have shifted in the ground.
Chain Link Repair
Fabric re-tensioning, top rail and line post replacement, gate frame squaring and new hardware for a perimeter that has to hold.
Aluminum & Iron Repair
Section replacement, re-welding of broken ornamental joints, hinge and latch replacement, and touch-up finishing on powder-coated and painted fences.
Diagnosing What Actually Failed
Two fences can look identical from the kitchen window and have completely different problems. We start by checking the posts with a level and by probing the wood or vinyl where it meets the ground, because the visible lean is almost always a symptom of what is happening below grade. If a post has heaved, shimming the rail will not hold. If the wood is soft at the base, no amount of re-nailing will save it.
From there we check the gate frame for racking, the hinges for wear, the latches for alignment, and the rails for separation at the fasteners. On vinyl we look for cracked panels and posts that have shifted in their footings. On iron and aluminum we look at welds, rust bleed and hinge plate fatigue. That inspection produces a short, specific list rather than a vague recommendation to replace everything.
The Repairs We Handle Most Often
Leaning and heaved posts are the most common call we get, usually after a hard winter. The fix is to extract the post, dig a new footing below the frost line, and set a replacement in concrete so it cannot lift again. It costs more than propping the post with a brace, and it is the only repair that stays fixed.
Sagging gates come next. The frame has usually racked out of square, so we add or replace diagonal bracing, replace worn hinges with heavier-rated hardware, and readjust the latch strike. Rotted rails and pickets typically fail at the fastener line, where moisture collects around the nail or screw, so we replace the member and reset with corrosion-resistant fasteners. Storm repairs run the same way: we match the damaged section to the original fence rather than leaving a visible patch.
- Leaning, heaved or rotted post replacement with new concrete footings
- Gate frame re-squaring, brace installation and hinge/latch upgrades
- Rotted rails, stringers, pickets and panels replaced in matching material
- Chain link fabric re-tensioning and line post replacement
- Wind-damaged and storm-felled sections rebuilt to match the original
- Corroded fastener and hardware replacement across all fence types
Repair or Replace? An Honest Read
Repair is usually the right answer when the failures are localized and the rest of the fence is sound. If three posts in a forty-foot run have rotted while the rest of the structure tests solid, replacing those posts plus the rails they support restores the fence for a fraction of a new installation. If the material is still available and the frame geometry is repairable, repair almost always wins.
Replacement becomes the better call when the failure is systemic: posts rotting along an entire run, a vinyl fence that has become brittle across every panel, or a fence that was built too shallow to ever hold. We tell you plainly which case you are in. If a repair will only buy you a year before the next section goes, we would rather say so than sell you the repair and be back next spring.
Matching Materials on an Existing Fence
A repair only looks right if the new material matches the old. Profiles change, board widths vary, and stains age, so we measure the existing picket width, spacing, rail dimension and color before we order anything. For painted and stained wood we match the finish so the repaired section weathers in with the rest of the run.
Vinyl is the tricky one because manufacturers discontinue colors and profiles over time. When an exact match is not available we tell you up front and offer the closest profile, orienting the new panels where the difference is least visible, or replacing a full bay rather than a partial one so the change happens at a post and reads as intentional.
Storm Damage and Winter Ground Heave
Northern New Jersey fences take a specific beating: saturated soil that freezes and pushes footings upward, wind that loads a solid privacy fence like a sail, and limbs that come down across rails and gates. Most of the storm damage we repair comes from wind pressure on a fence with insufficient post depth or from a hinge and latch set that fails under load and lets the gate swing free.
After a storm we assess structural safety first, stabilizing anything that could fall, then document the damage with photos you can submit to your insurer. Where a single section has failed we rebuild it to match the surrounding fence and inspect the adjacent posts, because a section that failed in high wind is often the first sign that neighboring posts are also under-set.
