Brick Pavers in Northern New Jersey by City Fence LLC

Pavers are the most repairable hardscape surface you can install, and that is exactly why the base matters so much. Individual pavers can be lifted and reset, so a properly built paver patio survives a settled area, a broken utility line or a change of mind about the layout. Build the same patio on an inadequate base and you get the opposite: rutting, shifting, sunk pavers and joints that open wide enough to swallow the sand.

City Fence LLC installs brick pavers and concrete pavers across Northern New Jersey for patios, walkways, driveways, pool surrounds and garden paths. We dig the base to the depth the application requires, compact it in lifts, lock the field in with edge restraint, and finish the joints with polymeric sand that resists washout and weed growth. The result holds its plane through freeze-thaw cycles instead of rippling after the first spring.

Why Homeowners Choose Us
  • Base excavated and compacted to the depth each use actually requires
  • Edge restraint installed so the field cannot spread at the perimeter
  • Polymeric joint sand that resists washout, weeds and insect nesting
  • Patterns laid to the sight lines of the space, not just the square footage

  • On-site layout planning for patio, walkway, driveway or pool deck
  • Material selection across brick, concrete, travertine and natural stone pavers
  • Excavation and removal of existing surface and unsuitable subgrade
  • Compacted granular base built to application-specific depth
  • Edge restraint or soldier course installed around the full perimeter
  • Screeding to final grade and laying of the selected pattern
  • Polymeric sand swept into joints, activated and cured
  • Steps, borders, inlays and transitions to existing surfaces
  • Cleanup, sealing guidance and seasonal maintenance advice

What we work with

We install and repair every major system, so the recommendation you get is based on your property rather than on what we happen to stock.

Clay Brick Pavers

Fired clay pavers hold color with exceptional stability and develop a rich, natural surface over time. Ideal for driveways, walkways and traditional architecture.

Concrete Pavers

Available in a very wide range of colors, textures and sizes, with consistent dimensions that make intricate patterns and borders straightforward to execute cleanly.

Natural Stone & Travertine

For pool decks and premium patios, natural stone and travertine stay cooler underfoot and provide a surface with no two pieces exactly alike.

Base, Bedding & Edge Restraint

Angular crushed stone compacted in lifts, a screeded bedding layer, and rigid edge restraint or a soldier course that holds the entire field in place.

Base Depth and Edge Restraint

Base depth is set by what the surface has to carry. A garden path needs far less than a driveway that takes a loaded pickup, and building a driveway on a walkway's base is how paver driveways end up rutted in the wheel tracks. We excavate to the required depth, compact the crushed stone in shallow lifts, and screed a bedding layer to the exact final plane.

Edge restraint is the other half of the equation. Pavers are an interlocking field, and the field only stays locked if its perimeter cannot spread. We install rigid edge restraint or a soldier course around the entire perimeter and pin it properly, because a patio that loses its edge will begin to open at the joints and creep outward one row at a time. This is the detail that most often distinguishes a paver installation that still looks new after ten years from one that does not.

Patterns, Layout and Sight Lines

Pattern choice is where the design actually happens. Running bond reads calm and traditional, herringbone locks a surface tightly and handles vehicle turning well, and basketweave gives a patio a distinct, structured character. Borders and inlays define an area and give the eye a place to settle, and a contrasting border is also a practical way to transition from walkway to patio without a jarring material change.

We set out the layout on the ground before laying anything, so you can see where the pattern lands relative to the house, the steps and the planting beds. That step also prevents the most common eyesore in paver work: a cut row of narrow slivers running along a visible edge. Adjusting the layout by a few inches ahead of time usually means the pattern starts and finishes with full or near-full pieces.

  • Layout set out on site before installation begins
  • Pattern choice matched to use: running bond, herringbone, basketweave and more
  • Borders, soldier courses and inlays to define and separate areas
  • Cut pieces positioned away from prominent sight lines
  • Transitions to steps, walkways and existing surfaces detailed cleanly

Polymeric Sand and Joint Stability

Joint sand is what keeps a paver surface rigid. Ordinary sand washes out over a couple of seasons, leaving joints that gather weeds, host insects and let the pavers shift independently. Polymeric sand is swept into the joints, then activated with water so it cures into a firm, slightly flexible material that resists washout and blocks the weed growth that makes a new patio look tired.

Application matters as much as the product. The joints must be filled completely and consistently, the surface must be cleaned of residue before activation, and the water must be applied so it penetrates the full joint depth rather than just the top. Done correctly, polymeric joints stay tight for years and the paver field behaves as a single surface. We also advise on sealing intervals, which further protect color and stability.

Where Pavers Outperform Concrete

Pavers have two practical advantages over a poured surface. The first is repairability: if a section settles, if a utility needs to be dug up, or if a paver is chipped, the individual pieces can be lifted and reset without leaving a visible scar. A cracked concrete slab means replacing a whole panel and hoping the new one matches after it cures.

The second is movement tolerance. A paver surface flexes very slightly with freeze-thaw cycles and stays intact, while a rigid slab cracks when the ground beneath it moves. In Northern New Jersey, where soil freezes and thaws repeatedly through the winter, that difference shows up in the first few years. Pavers cost more up front than concrete and they remain one of the most durable, repairable surfaces you can put around a home.
