Concrete Sidewalks in Northern New Jersey by City Fence LLC

A concrete sidewalk is a small piece of civil engineering. It has to carry foot traffic safely, pitch water away from itself, survive freeze-thaw cycles, and in most Northern New Jersey towns meet municipal requirements for width, thickness and jointing. When any one of those is handled carelessly the result is spalling, a heaved panel that becomes a trip hazard, or a crack that traces straight across the walk by the second winter.

City Fence LLC installs, replaces and repairs concrete sidewalks, walkways, steps and aprons throughout Northern New Jersey, including work on commercial and municipal properties. We form carefully, place at the correct thickness and mix for the intended use, and finish with the jointing and edge details that separate a sidewalk that lasts from one that merely passed inspection on the day it was poured.

Why Homeowners Choose Us
  • Precise forming for straight lines, correct width and proper pitch
  • Control joints and expansion joints placed to direct cracking out of sight
  • Compliance with municipal sidewalk standards and accessibility requirements
  • Replacement of heaved or spalled panels and installation of steps
Scope of Work

What our concrete sidewalks service includes

Everything below is included in a standard project. Anything outside this list is quoted separately so there are no surprises on the invoice.

  • On-site measurement and evaluation of existing walk, subgrade and drainage
  • Removal and haul-away of failed concrete and unsuitable base material
  • Graded and compacted granular base beneath the slab
  • Precise forming for width, line, thickness and required pitch
  • Reinforcement where the application calls for it
  • Control joints, expansion joints and clean tooled edges
  • Municipal compliance for width, thickness, ramp and accessibility requirements
  • Repair or replacement of individual heaved, cracked or spalled panels
  • Finish grading, topsoil replacement and site cleanup

What we work with

We install and repair every major system, so the recommendation you get is based on your property rather than on what we happen to stock.

Ready-Mix Concrete

Delivered to a specified strength and air content suited to exterior exposure in a freeze-thaw climate, not a generic mix chosen only on price.

Air-Entrained Mix Design

Tiny, evenly distributed air bubbles give the concrete room to expand when water in it freezes, which is the single most important defense against surface scaling in New Jersey winters.

Joints & Sealant

Control joints to direct shrinkage cracking, expansion joints at fixed objects, and clean tooled edges that resist chipping along the walk face.

Reinforcement

Mesh or rebar where slab geometry, loads or soil conditions call for it, sized and positioned to actually contribute rather than lie on the ground.

Forming for Straight Lines and Proper Pitch

Forming is where a sidewalk's quality is decided. We set forms to the correct width and hold a true line along the whole run, then establish the pitch so water leaves the surface rather than standing on it. A sidewalk that is level rather than pitched will pond after every rain and scale through the first hard winter.

We also check the base depth and grade before pouring. The slab needs a compacted, uniformly graded granular base that will not settle unevenly, because concrete panels move as a unit and any void beneath one of them becomes a crack or a heaved slab. On replacements we remove failing concrete and the unstable material under it rather than pouring a thin new surface on top of a problem.

Joints, Finish and the Details That Show

Concrete shrinks as it cures, and it will crack. The goal is to control where. Control joints are cut or tooled at planned intervals so the shrinkage crack forms inside a joint where it is invisible rather than wandering across the panel. Expansion joints at fixed objects like steps, walls and existing slabs give the concrete room to move without pushing into something rigid.

Finish quality is what you will see every day. We tool clean, consistent edges, control the texture so the surface has grip without being rough, and keep the brooming direction uniform. We also protect the fresh slab from drying too quickly, which is what causes surface crusting and random cracking in the first hours after placement.

  • Clean, uniform tooled edges along the full length of the walk
  • Control joints at planned intervals so shrinkage cracks stay hidden
  • Expansion joints at steps, walls and existing concrete
  • Consistent surface texture for safe footing in wet conditions
  • Correct curing practice to prevent early surface cracking

Meeting Municipal and ADA Requirements

Sidewalks in the public right of way are typically governed by the municipality, and requirements for width, slab thickness, joint spacing and materials vary across the towns we serve. In some cases a permit and inspection are required before pouring. We build to those standards and coordinate the sequence so the work passes inspection the first time.

Accessibility matters too. Where a sidewalk meets a driveway or a curb, the transition has to be usable and properly sloped. A heaved panel that creates a lip is not only a trip hazard, it can expose a property owner to liability. When we repair walks we look at the whole route, not just the panel that was reported, because a repaired section leading into a bad one fixes nothing.

Cold Weather Placement in New Jersey

Concrete placed in cold weather behaves differently, and the schedule has to respect that. Fresh concrete that freezes before it has gained strength is permanently damaged, so cold-weather placement requires proper mix temperature, protection after pouring, and sometimes accelerators or insulating blankets.

We plan exterior concrete work around the season rather than forcing it. If conditions are marginal we say so and recommend a date when the work can be done properly, because a sidewalk poured a week too early in November is a sidewalk you will be replacing in two years. In summer we manage the opposite risk, protecting the slab from drying out too fast in direct heat.

Our Process

How the project runs

  1. 01

    Free on-site estimate

We walk the property with you, measure the actual run, check grade and drainage, and discuss how you want the space to function.

  2. 02

    Clear written quote

You receive an itemized proposal covering materials, hardware, footings, removal and labor, with no hidden line items.

  3. 03

    Permits and scheduling

We guide you through municipal permit requirements and survey needs, then lock in a start date that works for your household.

  4. 04

    Professional installation

Posts are set to proper depth, lines are strung and leveled, and every panel, gate and surface is installed to specification.

  5. 05

    Final walkthrough

We review the finished work together, confirm gate operation and site cleanup, and hand over your warranty documentation.
