Fence Installation in Northern New Jersey by City Fence LLC

A fence is the one construction project that touches every corner of your property at once. It defines how the yard is used, how the house reads from the street, how much privacy you get from the neighbors, and whether a dog or a toddler can be safely left in the yard for twenty minutes. That is why we treat fence installation as a surveying and fabrication job before it ever becomes a digging job.

City Fence LLC has installed fencing across Northern New Jersey since 2006. In that time we have learned that almost every fence that fails prematurely failed for one of three reasons: posts set too shallow for the frost line, a run built level when the grade was not, or hardware chosen for price rather than load. We build around all three. Every project starts with a walk of the actual property line, a check of the utility markings, and a conversation about what you want the fence to do.

Why Homeowners Choose Us
  • Six fence systems installed in-house: wood, vinyl, chain link, aluminum, steel and wrought iron
  • Posts set at code depth in concrete footings below the New Jersey frost line
  • Custom spacing, heights and gate widths fabricated for your property, not kit-cut
  • Written warranty on workmanship alongside manufacturer material warranties

What we work with

We install and repair every major system, so the recommendation you get is based on your property rather than on what we happen to stock.

Cedar & Pressure-Treated Wood

The classic New Jersey privacy fence. Cedar resists rot and insects naturally and weathers to a warm silver-grey; pressure-treated pine costs less and takes paint or stain reliably when properly sealed.

Vinyl (PVC)

Never needs staining or painting, will not rot or host termites, and holds its color. The best long-term value for homeowners who want privacy with almost zero maintenance.

Chain Link

The most economical way to secure a large perimeter, with vinyl-coated and privacy-slat options that look considerably better than bare galvanized.

Aluminum

Powder-coated aluminum resists rust entirely, carries a clean architectural line, and is light enough to hang a wide gate on a single hinge without sag.

Steel & Wrought Iron

For estate frontage, driveways and ornamental work. Heavier, more secure, and built to be repaired in place rather than replaced.

Choosing the Right Fence for Your Property

The right question is not which fence looks best on a website, it is which fence solves your actual problem. A family with two dogs needs a tight picket spacing and a height that discourages jumping. A corner lot on a busy road usually needs privacy without walling off the front facade. A pool owner needs a barrier that satisfies the height, latch and self-closing requirements the state inspects. A commercial tenant may need sight lines for security cameras while still screening a dumpster pad.

We walk through those priorities on site and then narrow the material list to the two or three systems that genuinely fit. That conversation also covers how the fence will look from inside the house, where the gates land relative to the driveway and patio steps, and how much maintenance you are realistically willing to take on each season.

How We Set Posts So They Never Lean

Post depth is where most fence failures begin. New Jersey winters drive frost deep into the ground, and water that freezes beneath a shallow footing lifts it season after season until a gate stops latching and rails pull loose from the frame. We dig to a depth below the local frost line, widen the bottom of the hole, and set each post in concrete rather than packed soil.

Runs are then strung and levelled against a reference line, not eyeballed panel by panel. On a sloped yard, we step the fence in level sections and follow the grade at the bottom rail so the top line reads straight from the street while the fence still follows the ground. Corners get deeper footings and bracing, because corner posts carry tension from two directions.

  • Footings dug below the regional frost line and set in concrete
  • Posts plumbed and braced before any concrete is poured
  • Runs strung and levelled against a reference line, not freehand
  • Stepped panels on slopes so the top line stays visually straight
  • Braced corner and end posts to prevent tension pull-out

Gates, Pool Barriers and Property Lines

Gates are the hardest-working part of any fence and the first thing that announces quality. We size the opening around what actually has to pass through it, reinforce the frame with diagonal bracing, and specify hinges and latches rated for the gate's weight and width rather than the cheapest option on the truck.

For pool owners we build to New Jersey's pool barrier requirements, including minimum height, maximum ground clearance, and self-closing, self-latching hardware with the latch placed out of a child's reach. We also help you confirm property line placement before excavation, since fence setbacks and height limits vary municipality to municipality across Bergen, Passaic, Morris, Essex, Hudson, Hunterdon, Somerset and Union County.

What Drives the Cost of a Fence Installation

Linear footage sets the baseline, but four other factors move the number more than most homeowners expect. First, material: a six-foot cedar privacy run and a six-foot powder-coated aluminum run of the same length are different projects entirely. Second, removal: tearing out an old fence, pulling concrete footings and hauling debris adds real labor.

Third, terrain: a level back yard goes quickly, while a steep slope or a run through roots and rock requires more time and sometimes hand digging. Fourth, access: a fence that must be carried through a side gate and down a flight of steps takes longer to install than one the truck can back up to. Because every property is different, we quote after seeing the site rather than from a phone description, and the written proposal breaks out each of those line items so you can see exactly where the money goes.
